New York City health officials have confirmed two cases of measles, as the outbreak in Texas continues to raise concerns nationwide.
The city’s Department of Health has not disclosed specific locations or whether the cases involved children. Meanwhile, Texas has reported over 120 infections and one fatality. Nearby, Bergen County, New Jersey, confirmed three cases last week.
The Dangers of Measles
Measles is a highly contagious virus that can lead to severe complications, including deafness, blindness, brain damage, and encephalitis.
“Absolutely, you can die from it,” said Manhattan pediatrician Dr. Dyan Hes. “It’s a horrible, horrible illness.”
MMR Vaccine: A Safe and Effective Prevention
Doctors emphasize that vaccination is the best protection against measles. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine provides:
- 93% effectiveness after the first dose
- 97% effectiveness with the second booster dose
The first dose is typically given at 12 months, with a booster between 4 and 6 years old. However, for infants traveling to outbreak areas, doctors may recommend an early dose as young as 6 months old.
Measles on the Rise
Measles cases in NYC have increased in recent years. The city reported:
- 14 cases in 2024
- 1 case in 2023
- No cases between 2020 and 2022
The last major outbreak in 2019 saw 605 cases, prompting stricter school vaccination requirements.
The Importance of Vaccination
Many parents continue to follow vaccine recommendations, ensuring their children are protected.
“I’m not too concerned about it. One, he is vaccinated. Two, the government is doing all they can to prevent disease from spreading,” said Norman Nyu, a parent in NYC.
Doctors and health officials strongly encourage vaccination to prevent further outbreaks and protect vulnerable populations.
