Carfentanil, a Drug 100 Times Stronger Than Fentanyl, Seized on Long Island for the First Time

Carfentanil, a synthetic opioid known to be 100 times more potent than fentanyl, has been seized on Long Island for the first time following a seven-month narcotics investigation in Suffolk County.

Carfentanil, typically used to tranquilize large mammals, has made its way into the illicit drug supply, sparking serious public health concerns. On the street, this lethal substance is known as “Super Mario,” and a public health alert has been issued for Long Island and Central New York, where the drug was initially detected.

Arrests and Warnings
Authorities have issued warrants for four individuals suspected of distributing carfentanil. While three suspects have pleaded not guilty, one remains at large. Local officials are warning that the region’s drug supply is increasingly tainted with this extremely dangerous substance, amplifying the risks for those who may unknowingly consume it.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney warned, “That substance is going to contain at least in part either fentanyl or carfentanil. They’re turning a disastrous decision into an almost assured deadly one.”

Community Impact
Carole Trottere, a mother who lost her son to an accidental fentanyl overdose, expressed her deep concern about carfentanil’s emergence, calling attention to the devastating toll the opioid crisis is taking on young people.

“This is an entire generation of young people in their prime that we have lost,” Trottere said.

As authorities work to curb the spread of this deadly drug, community members and advocates continue to raise awareness about the opioid crisis, with a fentanyl crisis rally scheduled at Robert Moses State Park on Sunday.
