Organic carrots and celery sold at Whole Foods Market in five states have been recalled due to a deadly E. coli outbreak that has affected 39 people across 18 states.
The recall, announced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday, involves 15-ounce containers of Whole Foods Market-branded organic carrot sticks and organic carrots & celery sticks. These products were sold at Whole Foods Market stores in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, and Nevada. The recall was initiated by F&S Fresh Foods, based in Sacramento, California, after being informed by Grimmway Farms, a local supplier, about potential contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli.
This announcement follows a broader recall of multiple brands of whole and baby organic carrots earlier in the week.
Details of the Recalled Products
The affected products were packaged in plastic clamshells with the letters “”GH”” followed by three digits ranging from 236 to 284. They also have best-if-sold-by dates ranging from September 1, 2024, to October 19, 2024. Although these items are no longer available in stores, they may still be present in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers.
E. coli Outbreak Impact
The outbreak has resulted in one death and the hospitalization of at least 15 individuals. Federal health officials continue to investigate the source and extent of the contamination.
Health Risks of E. coli
Shiga toxin-producing E. coli can lead to severe and potentially fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Consumers who have purchased these products are advised to dispose of them immediately and to thoroughly clean any surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the recalled produce.
