E. Coli Outbreak Linked to McDonald’s Leads Burger King, KFC, and Pizza Hut to Remove Onions at Some Locations

A recent E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders has prompted Burger King and Yum Brands, which owns KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell, to temporarily remove fresh onions from select locations.

Yum Brands stated that they are removing onions from some KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell restaurants “out of an abundance of caution” and will continue monitoring supplier and regulatory guidance to ensure food safety. Burger King also responded by instructing about 5% of its locations, which received onions from a Taylor Farms facility in Colorado, to dispose of them and is restocking from other suppliers. According to Burger King, they have not received any indications of illness linked to their products.

This action follows a report from federal health officials confirming an E. coli outbreak likely linked to onions used on McDonald’s Quarter Pounders, which has affected at least 49 people across 10 states and resulted in one death. McDonald’s has temporarily removed the product from approximately one-fifth of its 13,000 U.S. locations as investigators work to confirm the exact source of the contamination, suspected to be either the onions or beef patties.

McDonald’s has identified Taylor Farms, a California-based produce supplier, as the source of the sliced onions, although Taylor Farms stated that testing of both raw and finished products did not reveal any E. coli contamination. However, the company has removed yellow onions from the market as a precaution.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that most of those affected are located in Colorado and Nebraska, with 26 cases in Colorado alone, including one fatality among older adults. Other states with reported cases include Utah, Wyoming, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oregon, and Wisconsin. Ten people have been hospitalized, and one child has developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure.

Symptoms of E. coli infection typically include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, with most individuals recovering within five to seven days without treatment. Health officials indicate that determining whether an individual case is part of an outbreak can take up to four weeks.
