Gov. Kathy Hochul Has Basal Cell Carcinoma Removed: What to Know About the Common Skin Cancer

Gov. Kathy Hochul recently underwent a procedure to remove basal cell carcinoma from her nose, using the opportunity to remind everyone to get checked for skin cancer.

The governor shared a video with her doctor prior to the procedure, in which Dr. Jesse Lewin explained, “It’s short. It’s done with local anesthesia. We use lidocaine. We remove it, we try to spare as much normal tissue as possible, and we fix it nicely.” A few hours after the procedure, Hochul posted an update, stating that she was back to work.

What Is Basal Cell Carcinoma?
Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer, accounting for about 8 out of 10 skin cancer cases, according to the American Cancer Society. It typically appears on sun-exposed areas of the body, such as the face.

Although basal cell carcinoma does not usually spread like other cancers, such as melanoma or squamous cell carcinoma, it’s crucial to treat it. If left untreated, it can continue to grow and affect underlying structures, potentially invading the bone or surrounding tissues.

How to Check for Basal Cell Carcinoma
Dr. Eric Loesch, an assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, advises looking for moles or pigmented spots that are growing, have asymmetry, irregular edges, or uneven color.

Loesch also recommends getting annual skin checks with a dermatologist, even if no visible signs are present. He emphasizes that skin cancers can develop in hidden areas, such as the feet, nails, or scalp.

Free skin cancer screenings are available in many areas, and you can find listings on the American Academy of Dermatology’s website. A key tip from Loesch is to wear sunscreen regularly to help prevent skin cancer.

Spreading Awareness of Basal Cell Carcinoma
Public figures sharing their experiences with skin cancer can raise awareness. Earlier this year, a film about Bob Marley’s life highlighted that he died from melanoma at age 36. Additionally, after singer Jimmy Buffett passed away from melanoma last year, many people sought skin checks as a precaution.

This kind of awareness can encourage others to prioritize their skin health and get regular screenings.
