For the first time ever on Long Island, a triple organ transplant has been successfully performed—an incredibly rare medical achievement, with fewer than 80 such procedures attempted in the entire United States.
The recipient, a 47-year-old man named Sergio Arias Cestoni, received a new heart, liver, and kidney in a 14-hour surgery carried out by rotating teams of specialists at Northwell Health hospitals.
Cestoni had been suffering from organ failure that forced him to stop working, and he spent months waiting in the hospital for a life-saving match. That miracle arrived in the form of one anonymous donor, whose organs were a perfect match for all three transplants.
“To have all three be a match for him is indeed a miracle,” said Dr. Nabil Dagher from the Northwell Health Transplant Institute. The procedure involved extensive coordination and expertise, with anesthesiologists and surgeons working around the clock.
Since the transplant, Cestoni has shown remarkable recovery. He reports feeling stronger, with improved heart function and renewed energy. Once limited to walking only a few blocks, he now walks for 30 minutes each day and is making plans to resume college courses and return to daily life with his loved ones.
“I feel so proud to get all these organs and try to honor my donor,” he said.
The groundbreaking surgery not only marks a significant milestone for Long Island but also offers renewed hope for others waiting on complex, multi-organ transplants.
