Health officials have confirmed a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in Central Harlem, resulting in 22 reported cases and one death as of late July 2025.
Affected Area
The New York City Health Department has identified the following ZIP codes as impacted:
- 10027
- 10030
- 10035
- 10037
- 10039
Anyone living or working in these neighborhoods who experiences flu-like symptoms is urged to seek medical attention immediately.
Likely Source Identified
Preliminary investigations suggest a cooling tower in the area is the likely source of the outbreak. The Health Department has already sampled all operable cooling towers in the affected region. Building owners whose systems tested positive for Legionella bacteria have been ordered to begin disinfection and remediation within 24 hours.
Public Safety and Water Use
Officials emphasize that there is no risk from drinking tap water, bathing, showering, cooking, or using air conditioners in the area. The bacteria is not transmitted through drinking water or from person to person.
Understanding Legionnaires’ Disease
Legionnaires’ disease is a serious lung infection (a type of pneumonia) caused by Legionella bacteria. It spreads when people inhale aerosolized water droplets contaminated with the bacteria, often from sources such as:
- Cooling towers
- Hot tubs
- Decorative fountains
- Large plumbing systems
The illness is not contagious and cannot be spread from person to person.
Symptoms
Common symptoms include:
- Fever
- Chills
- Muscle aches
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
Who’s at Risk
While the disease can affect anyone, those at higher risk include:
- Adults over 50
- Smokers
- Individuals with chronic lung disease
- People with weakened immune systems
Treatment
Legionnaires’ disease is treatable with antibiotics, especially when caught early. Prompt diagnosis and medical care are critical for reducing the risk of severe outcomes.
