A recall of meat and poultry products potentially contaminated with listeria has impacted dozens of schools in New York and New Jersey. The recall has expanded to nearly 12 million pounds of ready-to-eat meals, which were distributed to schools, restaurants, and major retailers, according to federal officials.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has provided a list of schools affected in New York and New Jersey. In New York, schools in the Bronx, Harlem, Staten Island, and Long Island are included. In New Jersey, schools in Jersey City, Newark, New Brunswick, and Woodland Park are impacted. Affected schools received pre-packaged meals that may be contaminated.
Jersey City Schools Superintendent Norma Fernandez emphasized that the recall only impacted pre-packaged meals, which have since been removed. Parents are advised to monitor their children for symptoms of listeria infection over the coming weeks.
Listeria infections can cause fever, muscle aches, tiredness, and more severe symptoms such as stiff neck, confusion, and loss of balance. Children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are at higher risk. Symptoms may appear days or weeks after consuming contaminated food.
So far, no illnesses have been confirmed in connection with this recall. The USDA’s recall affects various products sold under multiple brands at stores like Costco, Trader Joe’s, Target, and Walmart. The recalled items were processed at a plant operated by BrucePac in Durant, Oklahoma. The USDA advises consumers to throw away or return the recalled products, which can be identified by establishment numbers “51205 or P-51205” found under the USDA mark of inspection.
Routine testing identified the listeria contamination in BrucePac chicken samples, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has not yet launched an outbreak investigation. While listeria infections are rare, they can be serious and even fatal, particularly for vulnerable populations. Consumers should be cautious and check the USDA recall site for a comprehensive list of affected products.
