Bird Flu Detected on Long Island Farm: Risk to Public Remains Low

A major bird flu outbreak has been reported at a Suffolk County poultry farm in Aquebogue, New York. Crescent Duck Farm, Long Island’s last remaining duck farm, is currently under quarantine after the detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1).

Efforts to Contain the Outbreak

State and federal agricultural teams have taken swift action, euthanizing the entire flock of 100,000 ducks at the farm to prevent further spread of the virus. These measures aim to protect other farms in the area from infection.

According to Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Piggot, “Highly pathogenic avian influenza can wipe out an entire flock.”

Risks to Humans

Despite the severity of the virus in birds, health officials emphasize that the risk to humans remains minimal. The World Health Organization has reported 950 human cases of bird flu globally, but the virus is not known to transmit from person to person.

Precautions are being taken at Crescent Duck Farm, including testing workers who may have been exposed to the virus for any signs of H5N1 infection.

Monitoring the Situation

The Suffolk County Health Department has noted that bird flu has been detected in both poultry and wild birds in New York since 2022. However, no cases have been reported in cattle in the state.

Avian experts are closely monitoring the situation. Kate Perz of Cornell Cooperative Extension explained that the disease is often carried by wild birds, spreading through their droppings when they come into contact with animal pens or feed.

Impact on Crescent Duck Farm

The outbreak has had a devastating impact on Crescent Duck Farm. The Corwin family, who owns the farm, has had to lay off 47 of its 75 employees and faces significant financial challenges with a complete halt in revenue.

For farmers seeking guidance, sick or dead birds should be reported to the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets for poultry or the Department of Environmental Conservation for wild birds.

Health officials and avian experts will continue to monitor and manage the situation to minimize risks and ensure the safety of other farms in the region.
