A Long Island man has made medical history as the first person in New York to be cured of sickle cell anemia through groundbreaking genetic treatment.
A Life-Changing Breakthrough at Cohen Children’s Medical Center
For 21 years, Sebastien Beauzile endured chronic pain from sickle cell anemia. Now, thanks to advanced genetic therapy, he is free from the disease.
“Sickle cell was like a blockade for me, but now it’s just like a wall that I just jumped over,” Beauzile said.
Doctors at Cohen Children’s Medical Center used a pioneering treatment called Lyfgenia, which modifies a patient’s own bone marrow through IV transfusions to produce normal red blood cells.
“When we could use Sebastien’s own stem cells to do this therapy, we were delighted,” said Dr. Banu Aygun.
Over 100 Years in the Making
“Sickle cell disease was first described in modern medicine in 1910, and here we are over 100 years later witnessing the first cure,” said Dr. Jeffrey Lipton.
Sickle cell anemia primarily affects people of African, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern descent. Cohen Children’s Medical Center hopes to expand access to this life-changing therapy for those communities.
A New Future
“To the hematology team, the transplant team—you guys have really changed my life,” Beauzile said.
His mother, Magda Lamour, expressed deep gratitude, sharing that Beauzile has been receiving treatment at the hospital since he was just two months old.
Now, with his condition cured, Beauzile looks forward to traveling, working out, and focusing on his education. His goal is to work in the medical field.
“Amazing, and I can’t wait to get back to my day-to-day life because now I feel unstoppable,” he said.
