A widespread recall is underway as dairy products connected to a dangerous listeria outbreak have been traced back to various items sold at major retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Trader Joe’s, and Walmart.
The recall, which initially centered around nearly 60 cheese and dairy products from Modesto, California-based Rizo-López Foods, has now expanded to include snacks, dips, dressings, and salad and taco kits sold at these prominent grocery chains. Federal health officials have identified a link between these products and a listeria outbreak dating back nearly a decade.
As of now, at least 26 individuals across 11 states have been affected by the ongoing outbreak, with the most recent illness reported in December. Tragically, two fatalities have occurred in California in 2017 and in Texas in 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Several recalls have been announced recently, including products like Mexican Style Street Corn Bites from The Perfect Bite Co., Mexican sandwiches from Fresh & Ready Foods, and Marketside Bacon Ranch Crunch Chopped Salad Kits from Braga Fresh. Even meat and poultry products containing the recalled cheese are being monitored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
Salad kits from Fresh Express, Ready Pac Foods, and BrightFarms are also affected, with distribution spanning various states across the country. Listeria can survive in refrigerated environments, making thorough sanitation crucial. Symptoms of infection include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and more severe cases may include headache, confusion, and convulsions. Certain demographics, such as pregnant individuals, newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, are at higher risk.
Consumers are advised to discard any recalled products and sanitize surfaces and containers that may have come into contact with them. The investigation into the outbreak remains ongoing.
