CDC Implements Marburg Virus Screening for Travelers Amid Growing Outbreak

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will begin screening international travelers for potential exposure to the Marburg virus as an outbreak in Rwanda intensifies. This Ebola-like virus has raised concerns about the possibility of cases being brought into the U.S.

Starting the week of October 14, travelers who have been in Rwanda within the past three weeks will be rerouted for screening at one of three major airports: O’Hare International in Chicago, John F. Kennedy International in New York City, or Dulles International near Washington, D.C. Passengers will undergo fever checks and be asked about any symptoms or potential exposures after passing through customs.

The CDC emphasized that while the risk of Marburg virus spreading in the U.S. remains low, these precautionary measures are necessary due to the outbreak’s severity. Rwanda’s health ministry has already implemented screenings for travelers leaving the country, looking for symptoms such as fever, headache, and body aches.

Marburg Virus Outbreak in Rwanda

The outbreak in Rwanda has resulted in at least 56 confirmed cases, with 12 deaths reported so far. The virus has been especially concerning for healthcare workers, many of whom have been infected. There are no approved vaccines or treatments for Marburg, but experimental options are currently being explored.

In response to the outbreak, the Sabin Vaccine Institute has sent 700 doses of its experimental vaccine to Rwanda, aiming to begin trials with frontline healthcare workers. Additional doses are prepared to be delivered, pending coordination between Rwandan and U.S. health officials.

Travel and Health Advisories

The CDC has raised its travel advisory for Rwanda, urging Americans to reconsider nonessential travel to the country. U.S. citizens already in Rwanda are advised to seek immediate medical attention if they experience any symptoms associated with Marburg, including sudden fever, severe headache, or body aches. The CDC has also called on American healthcare organizations operating in Rwanda to follow strict screening protocols for Marburg exposure before allowing their personnel to return to the U.S.

With the outbreak still evolving, the CDC continues to monitor the situation closely while working with international health agencies to limit the spread of the virus.
