Measles Case Confirmed on Long Island, Health Officials Warn of Potential Exposure

A measles case has been confirmed in Suffolk County, Long Island, according to the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. The patient, an unvaccinated child under the age of five, did not attend daycare or school while infectious.

Health officials emphasize the importance of timely measles vaccinations to protect vulnerable populations.

Potential Measles Exposure at Cohen Children’s Medical Center

Individuals who visited the pediatric emergency department at Cohen Children’s Medical Center between March 3-4 or the Medicine 3 inpatient unit from March 3-6 may have been exposed. Patients who were present during these times will be contacted by the hospital.

Measles: Highly Contagious and Preventable

Measles spreads through airborne transmission and contaminated surfaces. Unvaccinated individuals exposed to the virus should quarantine for 21 days to prevent further transmission.

This is the third reported measles case in New York State this year, following two confirmed cases in New York City. Both previous cases involved children who have since recovered.

Health officials urge residents to stay up to date with all recommended immunizations to prevent outbreaks.
