As measles cases continue to rise both in the United States and globally, the New York State Department of Health has issued a travel advisory urging residents to ensure they are fully vaccinated before traveling to areas experiencing outbreaks.
According to the advisory, individuals should receive the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine at least two weeks prior to travel for optimal protection. The MMR vaccine is the most effective method to prevent measles infection.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease that spreads through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Individuals can transmit the virus up to four days before and after the appearance of the characteristic rash.
While officials note that a widespread outbreak in New York is unlikely at this time, the advisory emphasizes that unvaccinated travelers are at risk of contracting and spreading the virus upon their return.
“Measles is more common in certain parts of the world, and travel increases the risk of exposure,” said State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald. “It’s not just a rash—it can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, hospitalization, and in some cases, death.”
So far in 2025, New York has reported four confirmed measles cases—three in New York City and one on Long Island. Neighboring New Jersey also issued a health alert after an unvaccinated traveler returning from overseas infected two additional unvaccinated individuals in Bergen County.
Nationwide, the U.S. is seeing its highest number of measles cases since 2019. At least 20 states have reported infections this year, with a significant cluster tied to an outbreak in West Texas, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Health officials continue to encourage residents to verify their vaccination status and consult with healthcare providers before international travel.
