Mpox Warning Issued in New York Following WHO’s Global Emergency Declaration

New Yorkers are being urged to stay alert due to an ongoing Mpox outbreak in Africa, formerly known as monkeypox. This comes after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) a global emergency.

The variant causing concern, Clade I, has surged in the DRC and is spreading to neighboring countries.

New York City Health Commissioner Affirms Preparedness

Dr. Ashwin Vasan, New York City’s Health Commissioner, emphasized that the city is prepared to handle any potential Mpox cases. Drawing from experiences during the 2022 outbreak, Dr. Vasan reassured residents that although the current risk is low, proactive measures are essential. He encouraged individuals at risk to get vaccinated and to complete the two-dose series for maximum protection.

Dr. Vasan also highlighted the importance of global connectivity in addressing public health crises, stating that preparation and information are crucial to mitigating fear and inaction. The city has made resources available online for those seeking more information about Mpox.

Congressional Concerns About Mpox Response

New York Representative Ritchie Torres, co-chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus, expressed concerns about the potential for future Mpox cases in both the U.S. and DRC. He urged the federal government to develop a coordinated response strategy, particularly to protect vulnerable communities such as the LGBTQ+ population, which has been disproportionately affected by Mpox.

During the 2022 outbreak in New York City, over 100,000 people were vaccinated against Mpox. As of now, there are no known cases of Clade I Mpox in the U.S.
