In response to the growing trend of using medications like Ozempic for weight loss, a New York City Councilmember, Julie Menin, is proposing a new bill to educate the public about potential side effects. While these drugs have shown promise in aiding weight loss, concerns about accessibility and safety have prompted action.
Menin’s proposed legislation seeks to mandate the city health department to disseminate information regarding the potential consequences of using prescription drugs off-label for weight loss. The term “off-label use” refers to the practice of using medications in ways not approved by the FDA. Despite being FDA-approved for diabetes treatment, drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy are increasingly being sought after for their weight loss benefits.
Dr. Holly Lofton, director of the NYU Langone Weight Management Program, emphasizes the importance of proper regulation and patient evaluation before prescribing such medications. While they have demonstrated effectiveness for individuals with a BMI of 27 or higher, the safety and efficacy for those with lower BMIs remain uncertain.
Potential side effects associated with these drugs primarily affect the gastrointestinal system and may include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and heartburn. Additionally, individuals with a history of certain conditions, such as medullary thyroid cancer or pancreatitis, may not be suitable candidates for these medications.
Menin’s initiative not only aims to raise awareness but also addresses concerns about drug accessibility. It’s essential, she asserts, that individuals with diabetes have unhindered access to these life-saving medications.
Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Ozempic and Wegovy, acknowledges the bill and stresses the importance of prescribing their medicines according to their FDA-approved indications. They also assure that efforts are underway to meet the increasing demand for Wegovy.
As discussions around the use of these drugs continue, the focus remains on ensuring informed decision-making and prioritizing patient safety.
