New COVID Variant ‘Nimbus’ Linked to Intense Sore Throat
A newly emerging COVID-19 variant known as Nimbus is spreading in the U.S., with some people reporting a particularly painful sore throat—described as feeling like swallowing razor blades.
What is the Nimbus Variant?
Nimbus, also known as NB.1.8.1, is a subvariant of Omicron. According to the World Health Organization, it is currently responsible for about one-third of COVID-19 cases in the U.S.
Medical experts say Nimbus is more transmissible than earlier Omicron subvariants, due to mutations in the spike protein. However, it does not appear to cause more severe illness than previous strains. Early data show no increase in hospitalization or death rates compared to other recent variants.
Is “Razor Blade Throat” a New Symptom?
While many people infected with Nimbus describe a sharp, painful sore throat, experts caution that this isn’t unique to Nimbus.
Sore throat has long been a common COVID-19 symptom. The intense discomfort being described as “razor blade throat” may simply reflect individual variability or higher viral load, not a unique feature of this variant.
Doctors recommend testing for COVID-19 if you develop a sore throat. If the pain is severe, a medical evaluation is important to rule out strep throat, which requires antibiotics and can lead to serious complications if untreated.
COVID-19 vs. Strep Throat Symptoms
Common COVID-19 symptoms may include:
- Fever
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Fatigue
- Loss of taste or smell
- Headache
- Muscle or body aches
- Diarrhea
- Red or irritated eyes
Strep throat symptoms often include:
- Sudden fever
- White patches on the tonsils or throat
- Headache
- Chills
- Loss of appetite
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Difficulty swallowing
COVID-19 is viral and typically resolves with rest and supportive care. Strep throat is bacterial, and needs prompt antibiotic treatment to avoid complications such as:
- Peritonsillar abscesses
- Rheumatic fever
- Kidney inflammation
- Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (rare)
How to Protect Yourself from Nimbus
Preventative strategies remain the same:
- Wash your hands frequently
- Stay home if you’re sick
- Ensure indoor spaces are well ventilated
- Wear masks in crowded or high-risk settings
- Stay up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations
Immunity from earlier vaccinations wanes over time. Updated vaccines are recommended, especially for older adults, high-risk individuals, and those who haven’t been vaccinated yet.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Consult a healthcare provider if you experience:
- Severe throat pain
- Sore throat lasting more than one week
- Difficulty swallowing or a sensation of food sticking
- Unexplained weight loss
- New or worsening shortness of breath
Prompt evaluation can help distinguish between COVID-19, strep, or other conditions and ensure appropriate care.
