New Jersey health officials have issued a warning regarding potential measles exposure at Newark Liberty International Airport following confirmation that a traveler with measles passed through the airport on December 12.
According to the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH), the individual—who is not a New Jersey resident—traveled through Terminal B and Terminal C between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on that day. Anyone present in those terminals during this time frame may have been exposed to the virus.
Health officials are working with local agencies to conduct contact tracing and to notify individuals who may have been affected. Updates and additional guidance will be made available through the NJDOH website as more information becomes available.
This is not the first measles-related alert associated with Newark Liberty Airport. In August, state health officials reported that another individual with measles spent several hours at the airport over a two-day period, prompting similar exposure warnings.
Measles Symptoms and Transmission
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can remain airborne for up to two hours after the infected person has left an area, increasing the risk of transmission in enclosed public spaces such as airports.
Symptoms typically appear 10 to 12 days after exposure, though they may occur as early as 7 days or as late as 21 days. Early symptoms include:
- Fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red or watery eyes
These symptoms are usually followed by a characteristic rash that begins on the face and spreads downward across the body.
Health Risks and Vulnerable Populations
Measles can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, brain inflammation (encephalitis), and in severe cases, death.
Individuals at highest risk for complications include:
- People who are unvaccinated
- Young children
- Pregnant individuals
- People with weakened immune systems
Health officials urge anyone who believes they may have been exposed or who develops symptoms consistent with measles to contact a healthcare provider promptly for guidance.
