New York City will soon offer free sleep apnea screenings and at-home sleep tests to residents under a new law passed by the City Council. The initiative, which launches on June 15, will run for three years and also includes a public awareness campaign called “More Than a Snore” to educate New Yorkers about the often-overlooked symptoms of sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is a common but underdiagnosed condition that disrupts breathing during sleep, cutting off oxygen to the brain. Experts estimate that approximately 30 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, yet up to 80% of them remain undiagnosed.
Dr. Ana Krieger, director of the Weill Cornell Center for Sleep Medicine, emphasized the importance of the new initiative, calling it “an important step toward recognizing a condition that’s been overlooked for decades.” The American Heart Association has also recently highlighted the need for improved screening.
According to Dr. Andrew Varga of the Mount Sinai Integrative Sleep Center, more patients are now seeking evaluations for symptoms like loud snoring, choking or gasping at night, excessive daytime fatigue, and cognitive issues. Most of these evaluations are done through at-home sleep testing, which is both effective and convenient.
Treatment Options for Sleep Apnea
Treatment for sleep apnea varies depending on the severity. While CPAP machines are a common solution, mild cases can often be managed with lifestyle changes such as weight loss or oral appliances like mouth guards. Mount Sinai is also conducting a study to explore whether treating sleep apnea could reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
This new citywide effort aims to make early diagnosis more accessible—potentially improving energy, focus, and overall health for thousands of New Yorkers.
