A new sexually transmitted form of ringworm, Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII (TMVII), has been identified in the United States, with the first reported case occurring in New York City.
What is TMVII?
TMVII is a sexually transmitted infection that manifests as an itchy, circular red patch of skin in the groin area. Unlike typical ringworm, TMVII can cause more inflammatory lesions. This infection is caused by the same fungus responsible for conditions like ringworm, jock itch, and athlete’s foot.
Dr. Avrom Caplan, an assistant professor at New York University, led the study and authored the report on TMVII, published in JAMA Dermatology.
Case Report
The sole U.S. case involves a man in his 30s who noticed itchy lesions after traveling to England, Greece, and California, where he had multiple male sexual partners. Previous cases were reported in France and linked to contact with sex workers in Southeast Asia.
Identifying TMVII
TMVII spreads through skin-to-skin contact during sex. Symptoms include persistent itchy or painful lesions around the genital area or buttocks. Due to its appearance, the rash could be mistaken for other conditions, potentially leading to improper treatment and further infection.
Dr. Caplan advises seeking medical attention if such symptoms appear.
Treatment for TMVII
TMVII is treatable with antifungal therapies. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent complications. Open communication with sexual partners about such infections is vital to prevent their spread.
Dr. Ashwin Vasan, New York City’s Department of Health commissioner, emphasizes the importance of seeking medical advice without shame, as healthcare providers offer judgment-free assistance.
