New York State Officials Announced That A Resident Of Ulster County Has Died From Eastern Equine Encephalitis (Eee), Marking The State’s First Human Case Since 2015. According To The Cdc, At Least 10 Cases Have Been Reported Nationwide This Year.
Bryon Backenson, Director Of The Bureau Of Communicable Disease Control For New York’s Department Of Health, Highlighted The Severity Of Eee, Stating, “It Has A Very High Case Fatality Rate, Meaning Those Infected Have A High Likelihood Of Dying.” This Year, The Virus Has Affected Horses In 15 Counties Across The State, Compared To The Usual Two Or Three.
On Monday, Officials Declared An Imminent Public Health Threat, Providing Local Governments With Additional Resources For Prevention Efforts, Such As Mosquito Spraying.
Precautions Against Eee
Currently, There Is No Vaccine For Eee, So The Best Protection Is To Avoid Mosquito Bites. Experts Recommend The Following Precautions:
- Wear Long Sleeves, Tuck Pants Into Socks, And Shirts Into Pants, Especially At Dusk And Dawn When Mosquitoes Are Most Active.
- Use Insect Repellents Containing Deet.
- Ensure Windows And Doors Have Intact Screens.
- Eliminate Standing Water Where Mosquitoes Can Breed, Such As In Plastic Containers, Wading Pools, Pots, And Wheelbarrows.
- Change Water In Bird Baths Twice A Week.
Although There May Be Fewer Mosquitoes At This Time Of Year, They Are More Likely To Be Infected With Eee Or West Nile Virus, According To Backenson. Most Infected Individuals Do Not Develop Symptoms, But Those Who Do May Experience Fever, Headache, Vomiting, Seizures, And Behavioral Changes.
As A Precaution, Residents Are Urged To Be Vigilant And Take Steps To Reduce Their Risk Of Mosquito Exposure.
