NJ health officials warn of possible measles exposure at Newark Liberty Airport

New Jersey health officials are alerting travelers to a potential measles exposure at Newark Liberty International Airport after a passenger with measles passed through the airport on December 19.

Where and when exposure may have happened

The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) says the traveler—who is not a New Jersey resident—was in:

  • Terminal B and Terminal C
  • Between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on December 19

If you were in either terminal during that time window, officials say you may have been exposed.

What the state is doing

NJDOH reports it is coordinating with local health departments to:

  • conduct contact tracing, and
  • notify people who may have been exposed.

They also say future updates will be posted on the NJDOH website.

Why measles exposure matters

Measles is highly contagious and can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Health officials note the virus can remain airborne for up to two hours after the infected person has left an area.

Symptoms to watch for

Officials say measles symptoms can include:

  • Fever
  • Rash
  • Cough
  • Red or watery eyes
  • Runny nose

Timing matters: symptoms usually appear 10–12 days after exposure, but they can show up as early as 7 days or as late as 3 weeks after exposure.

A key measles clue is the rash pattern: it often starts on the face and then spreads downward to the rest of the body.
