Several New York City hospitals, including Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn, are facing a maternal health crisis after the deaths of two mothers during childbirth, sparking concerns about the city’s ability to provide safe maternity care. Families who have lost loved ones are seeking accountability and raising awareness about the racial disparities affecting maternal health.
Families Seek Justice After Emergency C-Section Deaths
Jose Perez, 42, lost his wife, Christine Fields, last November after she underwent an emergency C-section at Woodhull Hospital. The procedure, meant to save her and their newborn son, Anuel, ended tragically.
“They let my family down,” Perez shared, recalling the last moments he saw his wife alive. Despite the presence of over 50 medical professionals, Christine passed away, leaving Perez to raise their newborn and their daughter alone.
Similarly, Nelson Ramirez mourns the loss of his wife, Bevorlin Barrios, who died in September following complications during her own emergency C-section. The cause of her death is still under investigation, but her sudden passing has raised further concerns about the hospital’s ability to handle critical maternity cases.
Maternal Health Crisis in NYC Hospitals
These recent deaths have highlighted a broader issue: New York City hospitals are struggling to provide adequate maternal care, particularly for women of color. City officials acknowledge that hospitals across the five boroughs are grappling with an ongoing maternal health crisis, which disproportionately affects Black women.
Data from city health officials reveal that Black women are nine times more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes than white women. This disparity has fueled calls for systemic changes to address race-based gaps in healthcare.
In response, a spokesperson for NYC Health + Hospitals stated that the city’s public hospitals strive to provide culturally responsive and equitable care to all patients, but the families of those who have died say much more needs to be done to protect vulnerable mothers.
As investigations continue, the families affected by these tragic losses hope to see improvements in maternal care to prevent further needless deaths.
