Perdue Foods has issued a recall of more than 167,000 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets and tenders after reports of metal wire found in some of the products. The recall affects three specific products: Perdue Breaded Chicken Tenders, Butcher Box Organic Chicken Breast Nuggets, and Perdue Simply Smart Organics Breaded Chicken Breast Nuggets.
The U.S. Agriculture Department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and Perdue discovered that approximately 167,171 pounds of these products may be contaminated with a foreign material. The issue was identified after receiving customer complaints.
Perdue explained that the metal wire was “inadvertently introduced into the manufacturing process” and was found in a limited number of consumer packages. As a precaution, the company decided to recall all potentially affected products.
So far, there have been no confirmed injuries or adverse reactions related to the consumption of these products. However, FSIS is concerned that some of the recalled items may still be in consumers’ freezers.
The recalled products can be identified by their product codes, which are listed on Perdue and FSIS’s online notices. All affected products have a best-if-used-by date of March 23, 2025, and the establishment number “P-33944” on the back of the package. These products were sold at retailers nationwide.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled chicken are advised to dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase. Perdue is offering full refunds and has provided a contact number for consumers: 866-866-3703.
Foreign object contamination remains a leading cause of food recalls in the United States. Last November, Tyson Foods recalled nearly 30,000 pounds of chicken nuggets due to similar reports of metal contamination.
