Trader Joe’s and Dierberg’s have initiated a recall of certain batches of organic basil following a salmonella outbreak that has affected 12 individuals across seven states.
The affected product, Infinite Herbs-branded organic basil, was sold in 2.5-ounce clamshell-style plastic containers at Trader Joe’s stores in 29 states. Additionally, fresh organic basil sold under the Melissa’s brand in 2-ounce and 4-ounce packages at Dierberg’s stores in Illinois and Missouri between February 10 and 20 is also included in the recall.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), consumers who have purchased these basil products should not consume them. Instead, they are advised to discard the basil or return it to the store of purchase.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that seven out of the 12 individuals who fell ill had purchased or likely purchased the basil from Trader Joe’s. The affected states include Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin. One person has been hospitalized as a result of the outbreak.
Salmonella poisoning can lead to serious illness, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically appear within 12 hours to three days after consuming contaminated food and may include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.
Infinite Herbs CEO Grego Berliavsky issued a voluntary recall of some 2.5-ounce packages of fresh organic basil sold between February 1 and April 6 due to potential salmonella contamination. Berliavsky expressed regret over the possibility that the company’s product may have caused illness or discomfort.
Affected basil products have been removed from Trader Joe’s stores in 29 states, as well as Washington, D.C. Customers are encouraged to return the product to the store for a refund. For further inquiries, consumers can contact Trader Joe’s customer service at (626) 599-3817 or via email.
