“Tripledemic” of Flu, COVID-19, and RSV Intensifies Across New York Ahead of the Holidays

Health officials in New York are warning of a growing “tripledemic” as cases of influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) surge across the state just days before the holiday season peaks.

Data from Northwell Health shows a sharp rise in respiratory illness activity statewide. RSV cases have increased by 35%, COVID-19 cases are up 15%, and influenza is spreading most aggressively, with hospitalizations jumping 75% in a single week.

Flu Hospitalizations Rising Rapidly

Influenza is spreading faster this season compared with the same period last year. Since Thanksgiving, cases of flu, RSV, and COVID-19 have all climbed, a trend physicians expect to continue as holiday gatherings increase close contact and indoor exposure.

Statewide data indicates 1,399 flu-related hospitalizations in the week ending December 6, up from 798 the previous week. Hospitals across the region are already seeing the impact. Northwell Health, which typically treats about 2,800 hospitalized patients daily, reported caring for roughly 3,500 patients on a recent weekday.

Public health officials caution that these numbers likely underestimate the true scale of infections, as many people with mild symptoms do not seek testing or medical care.

Vaccination Remains a Critical Tool

Health experts emphasize that vaccines remain one of the most effective ways to reduce severe illness, hospitalizations, and deaths—particularly for influenza and COVID-19. While this year’s flu vaccine may not be a perfect match for the dominant influenza A strain, doctors stress that it still significantly lowers the risk of serious outcomes, especially in children and older adults.

Clinicians report that severe complications and deaths are far more common among unvaccinated patients. Flu season often extends into early spring, and health officials say it is not too late to receive recommended vaccinations.

Testing and Prevention Measures

Combined tests that detect flu, COVID-19, and RSV are available through many healthcare providers, allowing clinicians to identify infections quickly and guide treatment decisions.

Doctors also highlight everyday preventive measures that can help limit spread during the holidays:

  • Wash hands frequently
  • Stay home when sick
  • Wear a mask if experiencing symptoms
  • Avoid large gatherings when ill

As families prepare to celebrate, health officials urge New Yorkers to take precautions to protect themselves and vulnerable loved ones during this unusually intense respiratory virus season.
