The New York City Department of Health has confirmed two adult cases of measles and is currently investigating possible exposures at restaurants on the Lower East Side and in SoHo. Officials are working to identify and notify anyone who may have been exposed.
Why This Matters
Measles is one of the most contagious viruses known. According to the Department of Health, up to 90% of unvaccinated individuals who are exposed will become infected. The virus spreads through the air after a sneeze or cough and can linger in a room for up to two hours.
Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Morse emphasized the importance of prevention:
“Measles is a very serious, extremely contagious virus, but we are very lucky to have a vaccine that is extremely effective in preventing infection and preventing spread.”
Vaccination Rates in NYC
The overall risk to the public remains low thanks to high vaccination coverage among New Yorkers:
- 93% of children ages 24–35 months have received at least one dose by age two.
- 97% of kindergartners are vaccinated.
However, health officials warn that any decline in vaccination rates could increase the city’s vulnerability.
Pediatric nurse practitioner Mary Koslap-Petraco explained:
“If you don’t vaccinate your child, you’re not making a decision solely for yourself. You’re making a decision for your community, because babies under 6 months of age cannot be vaccinated.”
Measles in the U.S.
Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported more than 1,400 measles cases this year, the highest number in over 30 years.
In New York City alone, there have been at least 14 confirmed cases so far in 2025.
Symptoms of Measles
Symptoms usually appear 7–14 days after exposure, but can take up to 21 days. Common signs include:
- Fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Watery eyes
A red rash typically begins at the hairline and face before spreading down the body.
How to Protect Yourself
The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) remains the most effective protection:
- Free for most children
- Widely available through healthcare providers and city services
- For help accessing the vaccine, New Yorkers can call 311
Key Takeaway: While measles cases remain rare in New York City, the recent confirmed infections highlight the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates to protect individuals and the broader community
