West Nile virus (WNV) has been detected in mosquitoes in several New York City boroughs, including Staten Island, Queens, and the Bronx. So far in 2025, no human cases have been reported within the city, but health officials remain on alert as national cases increase.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at least 49 human cases of West Nile virus have been reported across 15 states, including Arizona, Louisiana, and Texas. Experts caution that actual case numbers may be higher, with infections appearing in areas that have not previously reported cases.
“We’re seeing activity in counties that haven’t had cases before,” said Dr. Nischay Mishra, a professor at Columbia University Medical Center. “And we haven’t even reached the peak season yet.”
Peak season for West Nile virus in the U.S. typically occurs in August and September.
Why the Risk Is Rising
Recent weather conditions—including heavy rainfall followed by humid days—have led to persistent standing water, ideal for mosquito breeding. Climate change is also a contributing factor, as it expands the habitat and seasonal activity of mosquitoes, increasing the risk of human exposure to mosquito-borne illnesses.
How to Protect Yourself
Health officials emphasize the importance of taking proactive steps to reduce your risk of infection:
- Use EPA-registered mosquito repellents containing DEET or picaridin.
- Eliminate standing water around your home, including in plant saucers, buckets, and clogged gutters.
- Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
- Ensure window and door screens are intact to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.
The NYC Department of Health continues to monitor mosquito populations and applies targeted pesticide treatments during summer months to help control the spread of the virus.
Staying informed and taking simple preventive measures can significantly reduce your risk of West Nile virus as mosquito season continues.
